If you’re lost you can look–and you will find me Time after time If you fall I will catch you–I’ll be waiting Time after time

–Cyndi Lauper, “Time after Time”

A few days ago, my son was blowing off pine straw from our roof. His daughter stood on the patio below, watching. “If you fall, I’ll catch you, Daddy.”

She’s three years old and not as tall as the avocado plant she was standing beside. He’s thirty and six feet two. But she’s going to catch him? The truth is she already has. Time after Time.

Of course, I don’t mean a physical catching She has caught him with arms that extend from her heart, with arms of Trust, with arms of Love.

How many times have we been ‘caught’ by family members and friends when we needed their arms? And how many times have we extended our own arms to ‘catch’ them?

Trust and love go together. We trust that the ones we love have our well-being in mind. They are not out to snatch everything that they can from us, or do us harm.

And we reciprocate, seeing others as equal to ourselves in the sight of God, remembering that He loves each of us individually, no matter who we are, or what we have done in this life.

This is what we do as human beings. We catch, we comfort. And  when we need to, we fall into the embrace of those we love and who care about us.

Time after time.

When we love as God loves, we accept others.

We forgive.

We are tolerant.

What if someone we’ve loved and trusted turns out to be a wolf in sheep’s clothing?

Jesus overturned the tables in the Temple, because He would not tolerate this kind of disguise. He did not sit blindly and quietly by while his Temple was used by those seeking power for themselves. If he had simply ‘left it alone,’ the behavior would likely have continued. We can understand this discipline; we use it as parents.

I would suggest that today we are caught in the arms of wolves in sheep’s clothing. We have been cajoled by false ideas of  tolerance and false ideas of our God-given rights. We have been fed the sugar of words, not the truth of them. We have most surely allowed ourselves to be caught by our own government–a government that has finagled our beautiful America, a country we want to love, into a country we can no longer trust.

Look, and be aware, of what we’ve fallen for already. Look, and be aware of where we are now as American citizens.

What has happened to our most basic right to be born?

What has happened to our right to worship our God, and our right to express personal belief in Him?

What has happened to our right to manage our own lives?

Our own businesses?

Our own country?

The “our” in all of this is no longer ‘ours.’ All of it depends on the dictate of the government.

The loving, trusting, and respectful homage we’ve paid to America and her government in the past is being used against us in this present.

We are surely being caught. Time after time.

But not in arms that extend from the heart.

Happy Birthday to America, The Beautiful.

May we, The People, find the determination to keep her that way.
